Xiaomi MIUI ROM and Apps Going Open Source

Chinese company Xiaomi decided to go open source with its highly-acclaimed MIUI ROM and other Android apps. There are no details on the reasons behind the company's decision, but in the end this will benefit Android users.

The company's ROM and other applications are being made available for the general public starting today via GitHub. Coincidence or not, this is the same git repository used by the CyanogenMod team.

Although not all Xiaomi apps are now available for download for the masses, the Chinese company promised full access to all its software in the near future.

Windows Phone Tango, Tango 2 and Apollo in 2012

Before the end of this year, we should see three different flavors of Windows Phone being delivered to devices, recent reports suggest. 

First of them will be Tango, which is said to arrive in the March-April timeframe, and which should bring support for 120 languages and for entry-level hardware into the mix.

Next, we’ll see Tango 2 being released on devices sometime in mid-2012, yet info on what it will bring new to the ecosystem hasn’t been unveiled as of yet.

Firefox 11 Beta Brings Add-on Sync, Chrome Migration and SPDY

With Firefox 10 out the door and Firefox 12 already in the Aurora channel, Firefox 11 was moved up to the Beta channel. Firefox 11 comes with several new features so far, though the emphasis is on developers rather than regular users.
Firefox 11 Beta adds Add-ons to the list of settings and data that can be synced to the cloud and across computers. Users will also be able to switch from Google Chrome more easily since support for it has been added to the Migration Tool.

Nokia to Kill Symbian with N8 Successor

Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia will send the Symbian platform to the graveyard sooner than originally announced, if the latest reports on the matter are to be believed. 

There will be only one new Symbian model pushed to shelves from Nokia, and it will arrive as the successor of the Nokia N8 flagship phone.

Nokia will continue to deliver updates to existing customers, but it does not plan on making available for purchase new models running under the platform, The Register reports.


Most probably, the handset vendor will continue producing existing Nokia Belle devices, but it has put an end on the development of new models.

Vulnerability in HTC Android Allows Hackers to Steal Wi-Fi Passwords

Researchers Chris Hessing and Bret Jordan found that an issue present in certain Android builds designed for HTC smartphones could expose 802.1X Wi-Fi credentials to applications that have basic Wi-Fi permissions.


Since Wi-Fi permissions are almost always related to Internet access permissions, a malicious application could easily obtain usernames, passwords and SSID data and send them to a remote server.

Among the affected devices, the experts name Desire HD, EVO 3D, EVO 4G, Sensation 4G, Droid Incredible, Glacier, and Thunderbolt 4G. Nexus One and myTouch3G are not affected.

Better known to embedded computing developers than to end-users, the thin mini-ITX form factor gained quite a lot of ground in the last couple of months, so Gigabyte has decided to take advantage of this trend with the release of the GA-MSH61QI motherboard for Intel LGA 1155 processors.

Just as its name implies, the Gigabyte board is built around Intel's H61 chipset, which offers a basic set of features for entry-level Sandy Bridge systems, as well as support for the integrated graphics found inside Intel's CPUs.
Speaking of CPUs, the GA-MSH61QI is compatible with all processor models that have a TDP of 95W or lower, and also supports up to 8GB of DDR3 memory clocked at 1333MHz via two SODIMM slots placed right above the LGA 1155 socket.

Microsoft Gives 20 Free Windows Phones to Android Users

Microsoft has been seizing each opportunity to hit Google’s Android operating system, and a new one emerged only recently. 

Earlier this week, the company announced that it chose to deliver no less than 20 free Windows Phones to Android users who have been affected by malware that slipped in the Android Market.

On Monday, Microsoft’s Ben Rudolph announced on Twitter that he had 20 smartphones to give to those who had been affected by issues with the operating system.

Sony Ericsson Intros Xperia Active Billabong Edition for Extreme Sports Enthusiasts

Sony Ericsson’s partnership with Billabong has been announced back in October when the handset maker released the Xperia active Billabong Edition in New Zealand.

The smartphone was exclusively available via Telecom New Zealand for prices starting at 330 USD (250 EUR). Today, both companies decided to expand their partnership to other regions as well.

Basically, this means that Sony Ericsson Xperia active Billabong Edition will be introduced in other countries starting this month.
 

“The first to benefit will be the athletes at our major international events who will be testing the Xperia active device in conditions as diverse as the snowfields in Austria, surfing the big waves of Tahiti and even skateboarding in Singapore,” said Scott Wallace, Billabong’s International VP of Strategic Partnerships & New Media.

Skype 5.8 is the latest version of the popular VoIP application for Windows computers. The app was put up for download yesterday, with features aimed at making video calling more pleasant than before. 

The new application release arrives with enhancements that include full HD video calling, Facebook audio and video calling (though only in beta at the moment), and Push to Talk capabilities, among others.

After installing the new Skype 5.8 for Windows, users will be able to make video calls with their friends on Facebook, even if they do not use Skype. All that you will need to do is to select the Facebook contact in your list, and then click “video call.”

ARM’s Next Gen 64-bit Processor Will Be Called Atlas and Apollo

Processors licensor ARM Holdings, has recently disclosed the code names of its upcoming CPUs based on the company’s v8 architecture which are the first ARM cores to bring support for the 64-bit instruction set.


ARM has chosen to go with a pair of classical names from the Greek mythology for its next-generation high-end processing cores, which will be dubbed Atlas and Apollo, according toEETimes.

EA Posts Sales Figures for Battlefield 3 and FIFA 12, User Count for SW: TOR and Origin

Electronic Arts has released some impressive figures about two of its most successful games, Battlefield 3 and FIFA 12, while hyping up the popularity of its Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO and the Origin digital distribution service on the PC. 
EA posted its financial earnings yesterday and, amongst the variety of sales and revenue figures, the company also mentioned the performance of its games and its digital distribution efforts.

First up, EA talked about its most successful titles, Battlefield 3 and FIFA 12, which both sold over 10 million units since their release last year.

Honda Website Hacked and Defaced by SpyDevilz

The “dog” subdomain of the domain used by Honda Thailand, the world renowned car manufacturer, was hacked by a collective called SpyDevilz, comprising 7 members.
A message posted on the defaced website hints that the hackers may be Turkish, but it doesn’t offer any other clues to the reasons for which the operation took place.

Japan: PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3DS See Rebound

Sales of the PlayStation Vita handheld from Sony has seen an increase on the Japanese market for the week, the first time since launch it has done so, while the rival Nintendo 3DS has also seen an increase in the number of units it has managed to move to gamers.


According to the data compiled by Media Create for the week ending on January 29 shows the Nintendo 3DS selling 84,789 units, which is an increase over the 80,960 that it has managed during the previous week.

Second place in the hardware chart has been occupied by the PlayStation 3, the bestselling home console in Japan, with sales that have also gone up to reach 22,924 coming from 21,155.

HWiNFO has been updated to a new version, for both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms. The new build for the two editions is 3.92.1515 beta and it brings to the table a small bunch of modifications.

First of all, the new build adds support for new hardware components, but it also fixes one problem with reporting of memory usage on nVidia GPUs in SLI. On the same note, reporting of Intel ME features has been enhanced.

Also newly added in this release is support of CHL8228 to report GPU VRM temperatures, voltages, currents and power (Radeon HD 7970, etc).

Microsoft Stores Taking Pre-Orders for Nokia Lumia 900

Last month, Nokia unveiled to the world the first LTE-capable Windows Phone device in its offer, none other than the Nokia Lumia 900. 

The smartphone is set to arrive in the United States exclusively on the airwaves of wireless carrier AT&T, and is rumored to become available sometime in March.


However, it appears that Microsoft stores are already accepting pre-orders for the device.

IE9 Strengthens Its Leading Position on Windows 7 in the US

When it comes to browsers on Windows 7 in the United States, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 9 is the established leader in terms of market share. 

The browser managed to take the top position from Internet Explorer 8 last month, and has enjoyed continuous growth in the meantime, now sitting at over 35 percent share in the US.

The older Internet Explorer 8 browser has let its usage share slip to under 30 percent since last month, and is expected to continue the descending trend.


In comparison, Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) should grow even more in the coming months, leaving rival browsers behind.

Fairfax Sites Hacked, Media Giant Says Credit Card Data Is Encrypted

Australian media giant Fairfax confirmed that two of its websites, Herald Education and Young Writer, were breached by hackers, forcing them to temporarily block users from accessing the affected domains.


In an interview with SC Magazine, the unnamed hackers revealed that they breached the sites only to show that they’re highly unsecure, but they also claim that they managed to obtain tons of sensitive information, including credit card details.
