If the WebM project is to ever succeed, and yes, Google is still working on it even though you may not have heard much about it recently, it is going to need to have hardware support in mobile devices.
So the fact that Google has released a new version of the Hantro H-Series 1 VP8 Hardware Encoder should be encouraging. This fourth generation device is now available to everyone.
"It delivers an average PSNR improvement of 0.27 dB over the previous generation and produces higher quality video than any of our previous RTL designs," Google's Aki Kuusela wrote.
You can check out Google's blog post for the full technical details, but the important part is that the latest version provides better quality video while using up less power, thus less battery.
Still, Google has plenty of convincing to do before you start seeing a majority of devices to support WebM. But it's a long term project, so no need to fret yet.
