There aren't many rugged notebooks out there, but those who exist know how to play the part, as GammaTech's latest invention gleefully makes a point of proving.
GammaTech just revealed the Durabook R13C, the sort of mobile personal computer that is fit to survive a lot of punishment.
That is to say, the machine is one of those products that places as much stock on physical toughness as it does on performance, if not more.
To illustrate, the device has a magnesium alloy casing about 20 times stronger than ABS plastic.
Also, a water-resistant keyboard is utilized, as is a handle and an overall rugged outer build.
All in all, the newcomer fully complies with the Military Standard 810G certification for drop, shock, and spill protection.
The tests that GammaTech's item passed through also proved that the Durabook R13C can withstand salt, fog, freezing/thawing and explosive atmosphere.
Performance-wise, an Intel Core i7-620LM processor lies at the heart of the convertible notebook.
That CPU is paired with 8 GB of RAM (random access memory) and a SATA hard disk drive (HDD), which can be exchanged for a solid state drive (SSD).
In addition, the company threw in an SD card slot, an ultra-slim DVD drive, GPS support, WiFi, 3G and Bluetooth 2.1 wireless.
Finally, the screen is a 13.3-inch LCD (liquid crystal display) with touch support (both finger and stylus).
As for security, thieves should have a hard time accessing the software, or even opening the thing, due to the Trusted Platform Module 1.2 and a Kensington lock. There should be a fingerprint scanner among the rugged laptop's features as well.
Unfortunately, there is no telling how much this thing costs or when it begins to ship. Until it does, those interested may as well drop by the official product page, located here.
